This turn of the century Brooklyn Brownstone Townhouse on Pacific Street was initially delayed by Coronavirus restrictions, but now, we are ready to share this finished project – and it is stunning.
Originally segmented into a smaller kitchen and parlor, the owners – an attorney and DJ/Wine shop owner – were keen to introduce a more modern and open feel to their home, as well as a replacement of the dated parlor flooring.
We removed an interior parlor wall, bringing in structural engineering techniques to replace it with a new beam. The result created a much larger, airier kitchen space. A beautiful custom kitchen was fitted, including fresh wooden flooring, beautiful slate countertops, and a new kitchen island, as well as a conversion of an existing extension into a spacious walk-in pantry. The resulting space serves as both a comfortable and functional area for both cooking and gathering the family for breakfast.
Moving into the living room, we then installed fresh millwork that modernized the space while staying true to the 1899 building’s original character. The house’s lighting was completely replaced – and the all-important air conditioning system was upgraded.
Our interior designer Casey Miller-Atre was responsible for the updated interiors and worked alongside architect David Varnish to create a custom runner for the upgraded stairs and entryway to the second floor, which now boast fresh white balusters contrasted against a walnut railing and matching walnut treads and risers.
During the course of construction, an unexpected ‘sink-hole’ was discovered by the contractor – prompting some interesting speculation into its origin. Whether it was a dry-well, a burial plot, or simply an old dumping ground, the team had to take time to fill the hole in order to continue the upgrades to the back yard above it.
The yard itself was renovated, including a new steel frame decking and cable railing system, accessible from a brand-new exterior door that replaced two of the house’s windows. The completed project is a functional, comfortable space with a breathable flow, and is already being well loved by its occupants.
