PROJECT
Third Street Music Settlement
Lobby
The Third Street Music School Settlement is a multi-phase project that involved the creation of new performance spaces, renovation of the lobbies and a new Reception area. The school had a tight timeline as all work had to be started and completed during the summer months, necessitating detailed coordination of MEP work and the selection of new finishes and furnishings.
The project had several challenges – the first being how to create a more open and direct entrance for the school that was both visually pleasing and functional. We removed a solid wall at the entrance in favor of a glass wall to open the space up and opted to use lightweight and mobile furniture so the space could be transformed throughout the day. This allowed for an easily modified space which could be used for stroller storage in the morning hours, a Study and Seating Area during the day, and then a Reception Space for pre-concert events in the evening.
Our team also designed new graphics to enhance the school’s current branding, which can be seen immediately upon entering the space. The colorful graphics help give the space a fresh identity, while providing important wayfinding information.
As part of our branding work, we introduced specific types of display boards and standards for how to display student’s art throughout the space in an effort to create a cleaner, more organized first impression. For example, red magnetic boards serve as information boards while white magnetic boards are used to display artwork. The flooring pattern on the first floor was inspired by the lines of sheet music with notes breaking through the lines at key areas in the building (Reception Desk and Main Stairwell, for example).
On the lower level we moved a Bathroom that occupied a large portion of the floor and created dark hallways. This allowed us to create a Lower Level Lobby Area for the Recital Hall and Pre-School Room. We continued the graphics and wayfinding throughout the space to help create fun and bright multipurpose space. This can be seen on the doors for each space and a piano graphic on the East Wall.
