VAKOTA’s Casey Miller Atre was approached in 2019 by the owners of this Brooklyn Brownstone built in 1899, who were interested in a new, open, brighter kitchen, a new deck with proper access, and a custom pantry in an existing extension among other updates that included a new Certificate of Occupancy filing to become a single-family residence. Casey led the Project effort working closely with Principal David Varnish AIA. Principal Stephen Taylor AIA and Associate Ryan Danby rounded out the team.
Although the home had been updated through the years, this effort would elevate the home to a new level of enjoyment for the owners. Despite being delayed due the Coronavirus pandemic that halted NYC construction, this project was our first to eventually proceed under strict safety protocol’s once the city reopened jobsites which lengthened the completion timeline as crew sizes were limited.
The design also incorporated a substantial amount of custom designed millwork in the kitchen, pantry and living area, new reclaimed walnut flooring throughout the parlor floor, a revised entryway, updating the existing stair with new railing, balusters, reclaimed walnut treads to match the floor and a custom designed runner.
New windows were added to the kitchen and pantry along with a new glass-paneled door to the custom deck. VAKOTA’s signature steel frame, supporting ipe’ decking with steel posts and cable-rail system, created a welcoming outdoor space to entertain and from which to access the generous rear garden and lower level.
The VAKOTA Team also specified new lighting and air-conditioning. Completed in spring of 2021, the owners and their dog are happily settling into their newly crafted environment that compliments their busy schedules with personalized amenities to enjoy during their downtime.
